Top 3 Questions Asked & Answered

Question 1: Do you have advice for road-mapping when the team is not able to be in the same room?

Answer: Yes, use video conferencing, Conteneo Weave with a roadmapping framework and split the session into three or four sessions over 2-3 days.  Prune the Product Tree is the perfect framework for distributed team roadmapping.  You can try a simple version here or for more detailed advice, subscribe to the online, on-demand training course (free for Weave subscribers, low cost for non-subscribers).

Question 2: When we add a release to a roadmap with the expectation that specific features will be present, how do we manage that expectation if certain features are then missing?  Future planning seems to increase uncertainty.

Answer: We completely agree that planning several releases ahead increases uncertainty. We manage expectation for the next release through sprint reviews. We manage expectations of several releases ahead by updated the roadmap every quarter to align on the integration of changes.  While the roadmap isn't a story map, they work together and both service as essential glue between strategy and tactics.  One aspect of this is a roadmap that commits to the delivery of a feature and story map that helps determine "how much" of that feature will be delivered.  For more about story mapping, check out this CAS webinar, this story mapping webinar or start a very simple story map in Weave here and a more complex story mapping canvas in Weave here.

Question 3: What metrics can be used for mapping users stories to features in the roadmap?  i.e. user points for business value?

Answer: User stories are created after roadmapping. For features on the roadmap, we seek rough estimation plus or minus 1-2 sprints. We may estimate business value of various features on the roadmap.  We recommend using T-Shirts or more course grained estimates of effort and cost for roadmapping.  The Impact/Effort Matrix in Weave can help with quantifying value and with T-shirt sizing.
