Backlogs, BLACKlogs and Dreamlogs - Entrepreneurial Agility

Posted by Luke Hohmann on Nov 11, 2016 3:54:26 AM

The central tool of managing work in Scrum/Agile teams is the backlog, "an ordered list of everything that might be needed in the product and is the single source of requirements for any changes to be made to the product." (ref)

And that's mostly true. But it doesn't reflect the reality of Agile, especially for Product Managers with an entrepreneurial spirit (hmmm... all of us). The reality of Agile is that there are three "logs" - the Backlog, the BLACKlog and the Dreamlog. In this post I'll share which of these are normal, which are healthy and which are dangerous and how to fix them.

Let's start with your backlog, since that's the one log we all have!

Budget Puzzles Considered Harmful

Posted by Luke Hohmann on Jan 11, 2016 2:53:26 PM

In my last post about Participatory Budgeting I discussed why surveys suck when used as a tool to understand budget priorities. But there is game-related evolution of surveys, so-called "budget puzzles", that are even more harmful than surveys because they create intense feeling of despair and harden political opinion. In an era of increasingly partisan politics, budget puzzles are making things worse, not better. What's especially sad about this is that it appears to be the exact opposite of the goals of the organizations who are promoting budget puzzles. In this post, I'll elaborate on why budget puzzles are considered harmful and show how collaborative participatory budgeting is the superior approach.

Collaboration Framework Spotlight: Product Box to Science Fair.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but fexibility is the progenitor of new collaboration frameworks, especially in in-person forums. Even with our long experience with live events and logistics, occasionally things go awry. Shipments are late or supplies we thought we definitely needed are sold out and unavailable. When faced with logistical snafus, Collaboration Architects excel as transforming problems into solutions.

Drinking Our Own Champagne: The Idea Engine 2.0 Design Jam

Posted by Luke Hohmann on Oct 28, 2015 5:10:54 PM

A little more than five years ago, Conteneo introduced the first scalable platform for visual collaboration, now called Idea Engine. Since then, we've built two other products, Strategy Engine and Alignment Engine, made drastic improvements to Decision Engine, launched a nonprofit to bring our techniques to the public sector and a whole bunch of other cool stuff! Unfortunately, along the way, Idea Engine received less love than it deserved and become a little stale. So stale, in fact, that we've decided to redesign and rethink the platform, reset our technology stack and create some powerful new capabilities that promote even more scalable collaboration and innovation. This is Idea Engine 2.0, and this is the first of several stories we'll share about its creation. Our hope is that you'll find techniques that you can leverage for your own products and services.

The Collaborationist is In. 5-Cent Advice.

Posted by Luke Hohmann on Aug 20, 2015 6:50:46 PM

It's safe to say that there isn't much I haven't seen in the conference/tradeshow world, having worked for more than a decade on all sides of industry, from show management to vendor to exhibitor. From speaker recruitment to booth design, I thought I'd seen and done it all. That is, until August 3, when I found myself and our VP of Business Development Laura Richardson at the Gaylord Convention Center at National Harbor, Maryland, building a booth for the Every Voice Engaged Foundation from PVC pipe, a couple hundred yards of brown butcher paper and tempura paint.
